RNLI Castlewellan 10k/ 5k and 1-mile Funrun

The RNLI 10k/ 5k and 1-mile funrun will take place on Sunday 11th December and will be on mostly flat terrain around the Castlewellan Lake. The 10k and 5k events are chip-timed with prizes for winners and iconic RNLI All Weather Lifeboat medals, which will make a great collector's item. The events will appeal to the seasoned athlete but also families and fun runners who just want a bit of fun and exercise in the lead up to Christmas.

We will also have a 1-mile Christmas dash as an option. Families/prams/ pets more than welcome. Please note fun runners will not be timed, they will also receive the Christmas medal instead of a Lifeboat medal.
Prizes for most festive costumes!
Beat the queue! We are able to offer pre-event number collection and/or registration on Saturday 10th December between 1-3pm at the Newcastle Lifeboat Station. As we only have a small carpark, it is advisable to park nearby and walk to the station if possible. Address: South Promenade Newcastle BT33 0EX
For those who cannot make the date but don't want to miss out on our fabulous medal, you can opt for the 'virtual option'. Just do the 10k in your own time, send your evidence to [email protected] (Strava/Garmin screen shot etc.) and we will post out your medal. Please note you will not receive a race number for the virtual run.
The event will raise much needed funds for the Newcastle Lifeboat Station. Crew have been busier than ever saving lives at sea and we need to raise the vital funds to help cover boat and station costs.

Updated Results

Hi everyone,
Apologies for the error, hopefully it is sorted now and I have updated the report below:

Massive thanks for your support for our first ever RNLI Castlewellan Christmas Run. Hopefully we can do the same again next year.

Please see results attached.

It was uncertain as to whether or not we would be able to go ahead at one stage but I am delighted we managed it.  We had almost 400 registrations but many didn't want to risk the cold weather in the end. No doubt it will be bigger and better next time. The atmosphere was great and it was lovely to see so many people in festive attire.

Scott Owen finished first in the 5k race in a time of 18.23. Jamie O'Flaherty took second place in 20.38 followed by John O'Neill in 21.18.  For the ladies 5k, Jessica Blaney finished first (seond overall) in a time of 20.29.  Sharon Madine finished second for the ladies in 22.11. Third place for the ladies 5k was Karen Keown.

Moving onto the 10k Keith Dawson finished first for the men in 37.25. In second place Rhys Cousins finished in 37.33. Third for the men was Simon Easton in 39.00.
For the ladies, Tara O'Hare finished in 42.07. Second for the ladies was Paula Earley in
46.28 followed closely by Victoria O'Connor in 46.54.

Our junior stars of the day for the 1 mile run were  - Boys: Oscar Keown in first place, Jamie McMullan in second and Ruaidhri Watson in third. Girls: Amber Keown came in first with Faith Greer in second place and Katie Shields in third.  Well done everyone!

Most people had headed on home when we drew our ballot so anyone who won and has not already picked up there prize, will be sent a notification next week.

I have uploaded some images to the event FB page: (1) RNLI Castlewellan 10k, 5k and 1-mile funrun | Facebook but it would be great if you could also share any pics you took today to the page as well as I didn't get many.

Together we raised almost £7,000 for Newcastle Lifeboat station. Thank you to everyone who helped, the Newcastle Fundraising Branch and Crew members, The Castlewellan Park staff, Castlewellan Parkrun Committee who helped us with the route, all the businesses that supported us by donating prizes, to Elite timing for a fantastic job as usual, and of course THANK YOU to all of you for coming.
We will aim to post virtual medals within two weeks of receiving the run evidence.

Happy Christmas everyone :-)

Weather Update

sent by RNLI on 10/12/2022 at 19:34
Whilst the cold weather has brought many things to a standstill across Norn Iron, we still aim to go ahead with our run as planned.
If you are in any way concerned about running tomorrow or travelling to the event then you might want to consider changing to the virtual run which you can do at a time to suit yourself (before Christmas) and we can send your medal in the post. For everyone else, you should run with caution tomorrow.
Although the 10k and 5k are timed and we have trophies for winners, we would really encourage everyone to lower pace expectations and just have a bit of fun instead of racing. In addition, it is recommended that you try to take smaller and quicker steps, that you pay attention to your surroundings, that you dress in layers for easy adjustments and that you wear shoes with good grip.
For anyone yet to register, you can still register on the day from 9am
If anything changes we will post here in the morning, otherwise - see you there!

PS - we have changed the plan to give the raffle tickets with your number (we didn't want those who picked up numbers today to potentially forget to bring tickets back). We will now just write out your names on your tickets and draw the ballot after the race in the court yard. We have added lots more prizes too :)

Castlewellan 10k, 5k and 1 mile fun run - Final Instructions

sent by RNLI on 09/12/2022 at 19:11
Hi everyone, please see final instructions for our event on Sunday below.

CARPARKING - Please note, if you intend on parking in Castlewellan Park itself, there is a £5 charge unless you have a season pass. Season passes are £25. RNLI do not get any of this fee, this is a charge that we tried to have waivered but with no luck. If you want to avoid paying the carpark fee you can park on street and jog up the park to the start line.
You will need to factor this into what time you arrive. There will likely be a back log of cars waiting to pay for park entry so leave in good time.
WEATHER - with the cold weather forecast over the next few days we are keeping a close eye on things. However, we envisage the event going ahead without any issues. The weather warning ends on Saturday and the park wardens are at the ready to salt the paths.
RACE NUMBER PICKUP - You can choose to pick up your numbers on Saturday 10th December at Newcastle Lifeboat station between 1-2pm OR on the morning of the event any time from 9am. Registration will be in the Courtyard; we will have it well sign posted.
RAFFLE TICKETS - If you purchased raffle tickets online, they will be ready to pick up with your race number. We will draw the raffle in the Courtyard room after the race.
TROPHIES - We will have trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female in the 10k and the 5k. We will also have a mini trophy for 1st, 2nd and 3rd boy and girl for the 1-mile run, even though it is really a FUN RUN, it's nice to have a bit of competitiveness too. When you cross the line, if you have a podium spot you will be given a token and we will take your name. You can then head to the Courtyard room for prize giving.
SPOT PRIZES - We will also have spot prizes for most festive costumes so make sure you get your sparkles on.
ROUTE - 10k and 5k runners will start at the same time, 11am. The 5k runners will stop after one lap and the 10k runners will be directed to do their second lap. The 1-mile run will start around 11.05 and will be a half mile run around a cone and back to the finish line.
PHOTOGRAPHS - We will be taking photos at the event to share on our event Facebook Page. If you want us to remove any photos, please let us know. Also feel free to upload your own photos of the day to the event Facebook Page.
MEDALS - All finishers will receive a medal. Fun runners can choose either a Christmas medal or a Lifeboat medal.
REFRESHMENTS - We will have water at the finish line and back at the courtyard we will have mince pies, bananas, and lots of other Christmas goodies.
OTHER PARK USERS - please be aware other people will be using the park so give way and exercise caution.
INCIDENTS - If you have any issues during the run requiring first aid, please inform your nearest marshal. If you are injured and can't walk, please ask another walker to inform the closest marshal. Stay where you are, and someone will attend to you as soon as possible.

On behalf of the RNLI, we would like to thank you for supporting the event. We hope it will become an annual event that will continue to grow and generate funds for our local lifeboat station. See you Sunday!
