ROAM 639

ROAM 639 is a permanently way marked trail in the Devil's Punchbowl, Hindhead, Surrey. The trail name ROAM 639 is derived from the initials of Richard Overall, a local young man who died from muscular dystrophy and the shared initials of my friends two sons, Alfie and Arthur Marchant, whose lives are also affected by this condition. The number 639 represents the number of muscles that comprise the human body and also indicates the distance of the loop (6.39miles, 10.28km).

Night ROAM and Day into Night ROAM were created to mark the anniversary of the trail's launch.

Enjoy the track whether you're a walker or a runner!!!

The creation of the loop has been made possible thanks to the support of the National Trust, Nicholas Overall (Richard’s father) who set up the Richard Overall Trust in his son’s honour and Action Duchenne, the muscular dystrophy charity most closely aligned to the form of muscular dystrophy that Alfie & Arthur have.

The trail includes some steep gradients, steps and uneven surfaces and provides a longer, more arduous self- guided trail to those that already exist. These include:

  • Sailor’s Stroll, 1 mile (1.6km)
  • Miss Jame’s Walk, 1.9 miles (3km)
  • Golden Valley, 2 miles (3.2km)
  • Highcombe Hike, 2.8 miles (4.5km)
  • Hidden Hindhead, 3.1 miles (5km)
