Rough Runner Bristol (Saturday)

Bristol, we’re back!

2018 will see Rough Runner return to the South West after our first outing in 2017, when 2500 Roughians crossed our Travelator finish line in style.

Our mission is to make obstacle events accessible to all, from seasoned runners to first timers and everyone in between, and give every single person an experience they’ll actually enjoy! So join us for our game show-inspired obstacle revolution, and help us make our South West event a regular feature on our event calendar.

You’ll have the option of a 5km, 10km or 15km run with up to 20 obstacles along the way, with the difficulty level increasing as you up the distance, so pick the degree of challenge that suits you best and get involved.

Even better, grab some mates, colleagues and family members and take it on together.

The Rough Runner Challenge….. is mainly lots of FUN but also:

Rough Runner is an obstacle course challenge, combining distance running with a variety of obstacles along the way, each inspired by game shows such as Total Wipeout, Takeshi’s Castle, Gladiators, and Fun House. Expect sweeper arms, giant pigeon battles, big balls and yes, The Travelator!

We’re returning to the South West after a great event in 2017, with over 2,500 Roughians taking on the Rough Runner Challenge. The grounds of Charlton Park will be hosting our full-scale, epic obstacle event, with a beautifully flat run throughout, all while overlooking the valley nearby. And of course, some seriously awesome obstacles along the way!

We’ll have a 5km route with 10 obstacles, a 10km route with 15, and a full 20 obstacles on our 15km route if you’re up for the toughest challenge. Best of all, everyone who joins us for the game show-inspired journey will cross the Travelator at the finish line. So you can consider that particular childhood dream fulfilled!

The venue is readily accessible from many cities, such as Oxford, London, Birmingham, Bath and Bristol.

DETAILS

  • Please arrive on site around 1 hour prior to your start time, to get yourself registered, set up and ready to run!
  • For most, driving will be the best means of getting there, so grab a mate or two and road trip it!

Things you’ll need to bring:

1. A print out of your ticket, a signed waiver and photo ID. You can’t race without!

2. Cash for food and drinks on site – there will not be card machines. Car parking is £5 cash on the day.

3. Suitable clothing. This is up to you, but we’d suggest a warm change of clothes for after the event and gloves to use during (for all those nets and ropes). You will get muddy, and so will your trainers, so don’t wear anything you are particularly precious about!

Otherwise just check back here in the run up to the event, stay in touch via our Facebook page, or feel free to drop us a line here.

Entry Fee Includes:
  • Bag drop service
  • An awesome medal for participating!
  • Free spectator access

FINAL INFO FOR THIS WEEKEND'S EVENT!

sent by Rough Runner on 12/10/2018 at 12:09
Hi Roughian,

This is it! Our final checklist of where to go and what to bring to make sure you get the best out of Rough Runner this weekend.

THIS EMAIL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE YOU'VE READ SO PLEASE READ IN FULL! (and excuse the shouty capitals...)

First of all - CHECK YOUR WAVE TIME! https://roughrunner.com/times/

Your ticket may show your requested slot, or you may have seen another time when booking, but that is NOT your wave time (the only exception is if you've spoken with some at RR directly about changing yours). Yours is in on the link above, so please arrive roughly an hour before to get yourself ready. You may well be asked to wait for your wave if you're too early, and you may not be able to run if you're late!

If you booked in the last week or so, you will not have a wave time so rock up from 9:30 to 11:30am and we'll fit you in. If you are coming with someone who does have a wave time, or you have a different time to your team, it's fine - show up with them and you'll be able to run together

For a full list of essentials for the event, please check out this page: http://roughrunner.com/participantinfo

Importantly, prepare yourself for the weather! It's pretty changeable at the moment, so come ready for rain, wind and/or sunshine - spectators too!

For the Roughian Rascals, please have a look at http://roughrunner.com/rascals-info for wave times and info specific to the kids' event. There is just one wave each day for kids, at 12pm, so please bring yours along an hour or so beforehand.

DIRECTIONS! The only access is from Crudwell Road (A429) on the West side of the estate. Use the postcode SN16 9RU which will take you right to the spot, and from there just look for the yellow AA road signs. Easy.

ESSENTIALS TO BRING:

  • Photo ID
  • A print out of your ticket
  • £5 cash for parking
  • A print out of a signed waiver form (which you can download here - https://bit.ly/2JRm2Ru)
  • For the kids' (Rascals) course, it's a different waiver, so please bring this one - https://bit.ly/2yxTsQs

OTHER IMPORTANT STUFF:

  • Wear clothes that are OK in the wet - you'll end up in pools throughout the course so come prepared.
  • Gloves - you will really need them! There are a lot of ropes & nets on the course, and gloves will help a lot in protecting your hands. We will have these on sale for £10 on the day so no Roughian needs to ruin their mitts!
  • Shoes - NON-SPIKED (our inflatable obstacles really don't like them!), but suitable for rough terrain including uneven ground, forest trails and hard tracks.
  • Cash - we do take card payments where possible, but most of the catering, coffees and other village stuff will be cash only.

FUN STUFF (though also very important!):

We'll have loads of stuff to do in the Runners' village, including a Gladiator Duel arena with Powerbar, who are also fuelling all our Roughians before and after the race with free energy gels and bars, so do say hi to them as you're attempting to knock each other over with pugil sticks!

Finally, stick around for the Travelator knock out contest at the end of the day. It's the toughest challenge of the whole event, where you get to take on the fast lane at ever increasing speeds, with a cash prize (and a whole lot of glory) for the winner! We also drop the prices at the bar for anyone watching, so you have yet another reason to stay on and enjoy the show!

That's it. See you very soon for the best game show-inspired obstacle event you'll ever do (till you come back again!).

Wave times & important event info

Roughian!

The event is nearly upon us!

We're in no doubt that your training is well on track, your upper body strength is nothing short of terrifying, and the Travelator will quiver at the sight of your menacing approach.

BUT, before that moment arrives, here are some important bits of info we need you to read. Enjoy!

Wave times and event essentials

We've uploaded your wave times on the link below. Just hit the link, read the essential info about the event day, and click through to find your time.

PLEASE DO READ THIS. We've had lots of people in the past who've turned up at the wrong times because they've clearly not read everything they should have! DON'T BE ONE OF THEM!

http://roughrunner.com/participantinfo

You're as near as possible to the time that was requested and we have kept you with the rest of your team. These times override any other time displayed on a ticket, at the point of booking, via email or anything else, so be sure to make a note of yours.

If you didn't book on with the rest of your team, or have been put in a different slot, or even yet to book, DON'T WORRY! Turn up with the team and we will let you run with them.

If you bought your ticket to the event after 11am on Friday (5th Oct), you may not appear on the list. If you have a team member who is on the list then come with them, otherwise turn up between 9.30am and 11.30am to register and we'll allocate you a wave on the day.

Be sure to read through the essentials that are on the link above at the same time. Remember to bring your ID, ticket and waiver at the very least. And remember to use the postcode SN16 9RU to get to the event, as there are multiple gates to the estate but only one you can drive through!

Roughian Rascals, there's some specific info for your wave here: http://roughrunner.com/rascals-info. If you've got kids and want to bring them along, you can get a ticket on the day for the 12pm Rascals wave - just bring them along an hour or so beforehand.

Want a tougher challenge?

If you booked the 5km or the 10km but fancy doing more of our epic obstacles, you can upgrade your ticket on the day. It's £10 at registration (or £20 if going from 5km to 15km!) - just see the Help Desk and they'll sort you out.

The Travelator Knockout!

This is the Ultimate challenge on the single greatest obstacle in the world, taking place at the end of the day for our adult Roughians. Entry is free for anyone who runs as part of your Rough Runner experience, and it's an absolute blast, whether you're joining in or cheering from the side!

It's your chance to take on the Travelator at ever increasing speeds, till there's just one Roughian standing who will win a cash prize and be crowned The Travelator Champion! Stick around till the end of the day (around 4pm normally) and get involved.

That's about it - We'll send you a final reminder of the essentials in a few days, so enjoy the sunshine till then!

IMPORTANT - venue update for Rough Runner South West

sent by Rough Runner on 13/08/2018 at 14:16
Hi Roughian,

We have news. Please read this email - it's important!

As you know, we had planned to hold your Rough Runner South West event at the Easter Compton Farm this October.

However, the land owners just pulled the rug out from under us and decided not to honour the booking we made last year, which is a disruptive thing to do to say the least! But as it turns out, a far superior venue that we'd looked at last year has become free (it had been unavailable when we enquired in 2017) so we've been able to move over with immediate effect.

The new place is call Charlton Park, in Malmesbury. Each year it hosts the WOMAD festival, where 40,000 music and dance fans are in attendance, so some of you may well be familiar with it already!

It's a fantastic venue, and will provide a much more attractive, interesting run - hence why we preferred it in the first place! It's about half an hour east of Bristol, easy to get to via the M4, and is well worth the journey for anyone with a slightly longer travel time.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused, but the move from Easter Compton was out of our control, though it will make for a much better event for you!

See you there.
